Outside The Pen: Santiago Time

DATE POSTED:February 11, 2024

In 2023 Santiago Time made the finals at a few different shows, qualified for the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) World Show in the Open Bridle and captured the Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Open Bridle Championship at the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity.

Santiago Time began his reined cow horse career with EquiStat Elite $1 Million Rider Nick Dowers in 2017 and has made the finals at nearly every show since. He was also Dowers’ mount during the 2022 The Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge.

Quarter Horse News talked with trainer Nick Dowers at the 2023 Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity to see what Santiago Time is like outside the show pen.

Favorite treat?
Pop tarts or jelly filled donuts. “My wife really loves to feed them and love on ’em. She’s got all the horses just eating all kinds of sweets. She really just started coming to shows here in the last couple years. And Pie has always been pretty serious, not super in your back pocket kind of a horse. Now in the last year, he’s totally flipped, he sees you coming and gets all excited and wants to know what you’re bringing him to eat.”

Typical Personality?
“Pretty chill. He’s just your stereotypical gelding where he’s just easy to be around.”

Personality when turned out?
“When he gets turned out, or like when he’s had a break and he comes back he’s spunky, and that lasts for about 10 minutes and then he’s back to normal.”

What does he do the best?
“Probably his circles. I’ve plus one’d his circles, probably more times than any horse that I’ve shown.”
