Steady Wins the Race for Red Freckled Amigo & Eric Wisehart

DATE POSTED:September 6, 2022

Red Freckled Amigo and Eric Wisehart have been working together since January and got their first big win at the Idaho Cutting Horse Association (ICHA) Futurity Open.

The slow and steady pace won the race, as the duo marked a winning score of 223 during the finals on Aug. 31 in Nampa, Idaho.

They banked a total of $13,130 for their efforts between the Futurity’s Open and Gelding Incentive.

Known around the barn as “Amigo,” the gelding (Dual Smart Rey x Ginger Pepto x Peptoboonsmal) is owned by Robert “Bob” Luty. He was purchased at the beginning of his 3-year-old year from Jake Pinheiro, who had him in training with Phillip Ralls as a 2-year-old.

“He is a very simple kind of horse. I make sure he is really tied to the cow and always looking at it and that is really about it. He is super easy,” Wisehart said.

Early Futurity Success

Wisehart notes that being able to work fresh cattle at home has aided in the success of his string of horses for the early cutting horse futurities.

“I’ve been just trying to keep his training as steady as possible and not too much time off if I can help it. I try and take him on the road as much as I can,” Wisehart said about Amigo.

Amigo started out the early futurity season close to the top at a couple of shows, but came out strong Aug. 30 on some tough cattle for 3-year-olds.

“We’ve always kind of known he was a nice horse and we didn’t know really how good he was until we started showing him. Like, the first time we showed him we marked a [73] on him and then the second time we marked a 75 on him,” Wisehart said. “And, then he was obviously really good here and he just keeps getting better every single run.”

Wisehart had Morgan Cromer, Brent Erickson, Kenny Platt, and Todd Adolf helping him in the pen. He thanked his wife, Kendall, for helping him turn back and all that she puts up with in the day-to-day operations of horse training.

Red Freckled Amigo’s Pedigree

Red Freckled Amigo’s dam, Ginger Pepto, (Peptoboonsmal x Stella Starlight x Grays Starlight) was raised and primarily shown by Lachlan Perks. She has a total lifetime earnings of $99,259, according to EquiStat.

Ginger Pepto placed at many major events including the Breeders Invitational and NCHA Super Stakes. She then went on as a producer with three get having total earnings of $95,749, according to EquiStat.

The next event to watch this duo will be the Cascades Futurity in Redmond, Oregon. Wisehart will be going down the road to small futurities this fall leading up to the NCHA Futurity, which starts Nov. 14 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Reserve champion in the Idaho Cutting Horse Association Futurity was Halzey (Reyzin The Cash x Kattalyst x Metallic Cat) and Adan Banuelos marking a 220 and the pair earned $10,000 for owners Ten/27 Ranch.
